Little Red Riding Hood: Untold Story

This project is a "failed fairy tale" where instead of Little Red Riding hood getting eaten by the wolf she takes an axe and chops him up fashioning herself a beautiful wolf hat out of his fur. Then she proceeds to bring the basket of goodies to grandma. Below you can see my process for this project.

I always try and plan my projects out, but it never really works that way. I wish I was a successful planner, but unfortunately everything is always spontaneous as I work and things sort of happen as I go along.

Little Red says hi, creepy little bald child. For this puppet I discovered liquid latex and used it for the hands. They look creepy, but it works. I will get it right one of these days.

Here is my drawing of the hand drawn text for the book cover. I wanted it to have an elegant, but dark old fashioned feel since I was re creating a scene from an old story. Also here is the little basket I wove. For my first time weaving anything I caught on pretty fast and it only took me about 10 minutes to weave.

The left is just a low quality 1phone picture of the set up in my living room, not really an adequate studio, but hey it works. And on the right is my final image. I am really happy how this came out and I love how it looks like a hybrid of a photo and an illustration. Hoping to get better with my photography and editing in the future. Little steps though.

Final deisgn for "The Devil" tarot card

Illustrators in the illustration club here at The Art Institute of Boston have been working collaboratively on re creating in their own style the major arcana. We all had our card selected at random and I was given "The Devil." Here is my final shot of this new little 3-D creation! Enjoy :)
(surprised my fire alarms didn't go off)

Little Devil (Character for a collaborative Taro Card series)

This is how I like my desk. Covered in ideas.
It is so satisfying to see a character go from a simple doodle in your sketchbook to a tangible object.
This little 5 hour project was for a taro card design for part of a series of the Major Arcana that the Illustration Club at The Art Institute of Boston is collaboratively working on.
Very excited to see how my final photograph comes out.
It is funny when I am making these characters sometimes because I sew their outfit and then after I cut the last thread I realize that I had not thought about how this would make it onto his body.

But in the end it worked out :) he is wearing little devil footy pajamas. Trying to make evil a little cuter. Hoping to finish his hands, feet, and environment this week. Stay tuned for the final card design. Might also make a little story to go along with him, but who knows.

100 Prints moves to Cambridge!

My 100 Prints exploratory intaglio quilt has moved from the gallery in 601 Newbury Street at AIB to a storefront window display on the corner of Everett Street and Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge, MA! Me along with 4 other talented artists will be exhibiting our work in these store front windows between now and march :) so satisfying to see your work on display in different locations, gives it a whole new context.

These are some snapshots of Denise Driscol (http://www.denisedriscoll.com/Home.html) a very talented artist and teacher at the Art Institute of Boston, installing the 100 pieces that us students made for the 100 gallery that had been at AIB last month in honor of AIB's centennial! So thankful to have had this opportunity!

This is a view from the street! I really enjoy the orange background against my busy quilt.

Making of Medusa

This is the sculpture and the first stages of paint for a painting of Medusa I am working on. This painting is taking Medusa and seeing her as a victim. The first image is air dry terracotta base sculpture. The second and third picture are the first applications of paint. I was very inspired by this amazing sculpture artist Steve Gibson, you van view his work at http://stevegibson.eu/, absolutely amazing work, but I really wanted the painterly look for this sculpture, it is supposed to look as if Medusa is caught in the painting and she is trying to escape, so essentially a painting coming to life.

Final Spreads for The Goblin Market

These are the final spreads for my book project. We had three choices, Goblin Market, Blue Beard, and Little Red Riding Hood. Since I have a twin and we are very close, I really connected with Goblin Market, for it is based on a story of the love between sisters. This story takes it a little far, but it does express the tight bond between sisters.
I had a lot of fun sculpting, for these are my first pair of pose-able "puppets", the only thing I wish was done differently is better quality photography and working on the back grounds more for a better sense of depth and environment. I am going to re shoot these after finals week is done killing me. I have to turn these in now, but hopefully I will get around to finishing the entire book. Nice little summer project I suppose.
